How Heat Styling Tools Affect Hair Loss And Thinning Hair

It seems like most days we can't leave the house without flat-ironing or curling our hair to make sure it's in a perfect position. Although that is the perfect temporary solution to your hair, it's not ideal for maintaining longevity and can lead to hair loss and thinning hair if you're not careful. Here are some tips on how to enjoy your hot tools while saving your hair from breakage.

1. Keep your hot iron at a low heat setting

While styling your hair, use a lower temperature and don't hold it for too long- no more than 3-5 seconds.

2. Use a thermal heat protectant

From drugstore to high end, there are multiple brands that carry quality heat protectants that are effective and prevent split ends.

3. Give your hair 'breaks'

Try using 'no heat' hairstyles to give your hair and scalp time to breathe. Constant heat on a daily basis will cause the hair shaft to weaken and over time fall out.

4. Air dry at night

Showering before bed is the way to go. Towel dry, apply a leave-in conditioner and sleep with a satin pillowcase. You would be surprised how much natural volume you get from air drying.
